The Draughtsman’s Contract (1982)

  • The Sherborne Newland Sherborne UK (map)

A landmark of modern British cinema, The Draughtsman’s Contract is as visually sumptuous as it is deliciously sharp. In late-17th-century Wiltshire, the confident draughtsman Mr Neville is hired to create a series of twelve drawings of a country estate while its owner is away. He negotiates terms that go far beyond payment — and as “incongruous” details appear within the frames he’s capturing, suspicion grows that the drawings may be recording evidence, not simply scenery. When a body is later pulled from the moat, Neville’s elegant compositions begin to look like clues… or accusations.

Expect extravagant costumes, acidic dialogue, formal gardens, and a twisting plot — all propelled by Michael Nyman’s mesmerising score. A cinematic treat for anyone who loves art, architecture, and mysteries with a wicked edge.
