Our Founders’ Story

The Sherborne is the legacy of Michael and Sally Cannon.

It began with the late Michael Cannon’s deep love of heritage and culture. Michael believed that history should not be locked away, but brought to life—shared, celebrated, and made relevant for future generations. His vision was to see Sherborne’s rich past reimagined as a living, breathing cultural centre for the community.

Sally Cannon has carried this vision forward with dedication and care. Guided by her commitment to both heritage and innovation, she has continued to nurture The Sherborne, ensuring that Michael’s dream did not end with him but has grown into something lasting and alive.

Together, Michael and Sally created more than just a space—they created a promise: that The Sherborne would always be a place where the past is honoured, the present is celebrated, and the future is shaped with imagination and courage.

Today, every exhibition, every performance, every gathering at The Sherborne carries their story. It is a tribute to Michael’s vision and to Sally’s ongoing devotion—a legacy that belongs not only to them, but to the whole community.

Turning opportunity into legacy

Michael Cannon made his money by spotting undervalued properties and transforming them into thriving, revenue-generating enterprises, and Sherborne House was no exception.

Applying the same hands-on approach that had built his pub and hospitality empire, he carefully oversaw the restoration of the Grade I listed house, investing in structural repairs, period-appropriate fixtures, and thoughtful interior design. Every decision—from sourcing historic details to orchestrating the layout and ambience—was guided by his understanding of how to add value and appeal, turning neglected spaces into vibrant, desirable destinations.

In doing so, Cannon not only preserved Sherborne House’s heritage but also demonstrated the commercial acumen that had consistently turned bold renovations into financial success.

Custodians of a Living Vision

Today, we are the custodians of a remarkable legacy, entrusted to carry forward the vision of Michael and Sally Cannon. Their dream of The Sherborne as a vibrant cultural centre lives on in every exhibition, performance, and gathering. We honour the past, celebrate the present, and nurture a future where heritage and creativity continue to inspire the community.
