Join us for another carefully chosen evening of cinema at The Sherborne, presented in partnership with Cinemathèque.
Olivier Assayas’ beautifully observed French drama Summer Hours follows three siblings brought together at their family’s country house to celebrate the 75th birthday of their mother, Hélène.
Surrounded by the remarkable collection of art and furniture she inherited from her artist uncle, Hélène begins to consider what will become of the house and its contents after her death. When the siblings are faced with that decision, their differing lives, priorities and attachments begin to emerge.
Starring Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling and Jérémie Renier, Summer Hours is a graceful and deeply moving reflection on family, memory and the objects through which we preserve our past. Lightly told and filled with sun-dappled beauty, it asks what we inherit from those we love, and what can truly be passed on.
Made as part of a series of films initiated by the Musée d’Orsay, the film offers a particularly thoughtful exploration of the relationship between art, ownership and memory.
