In Shirley: Visions of Reality, Austrian director Gustav Deutsch creates a mesmerising cinematic world inspired by thirteen of Edward Hopper’s most iconic paintings. Through a fictional narrative, the film follows Shirley, a New York actress, across the years 1931 to 1963, as her inner life unfolds against a backdrop of political tension, cultural change and the evolving shape of modern America. Each scene is carefully composed from Hopper’s work, inviting us to step inside the stillness, light and psychological depth of his paintings.
Striking, unusual and visually spellbinding, Shirley: Visions of Reality is part film, part artwork, and part meditation on solitude, performance and the American century. A compelling screening for lovers of art on screen, thoughtful cinema, and films that reward close attention.
