Join us for the opening night of a new season of carefully chosen cinema at The Sherborne, presented in partnership with Cinemathèque.
Kelly Reichardt turns the traditional heist film quietly inside out in The Mastermind, starring Josh O’Connor as J.B. Mooney, an unemployed carpenter and amateur art thief living in suburban Massachusetts in 1970.
Convinced he has devised the perfect plan, Mooney assembles a small group of accomplices and sets out to steal a collection of paintings from a local museum. But when the robbery begins to unravel, its consequences reach far beyond the museum walls.
Filled with quiet tension, dry humour and beautifully observed detail, The Mastermind is a thoughtful and wonderfully unconventional crime story from one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive filmmakers.
The film premiered in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and features a superb supporting cast including Alana Haim, Hope Davis, John Magaro, Gaby Hoffmann and Bill Camp.
