David Tovey Talk: St Ives School

£5.00

Long before St Ives became synonymous with British modernism, it was already a place of artistic pilgrimage.

Join art historian David Tovey for a richly illustrated talk exploring the original St Ives School: the remarkable colony of painters who gathered on the Cornish coast in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawn by its extraordinary light, working harbour, fishing life and dramatic seascapes.

Bringing together artists from Britain, Europe and America, this earlier generation helped establish St Ives as one of the most important and internationally connected art colonies in Britain, decades before Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and the later modernists transformed the town’s reputation.

In this fascinating talk, Tovey will uncover the stories, friendships and influences that shaped this vibrant coastal movement, and reveal why St Ives became known as “the Mecca of the Seascapist.”

Make a day of it at The Sherborne: explore the House and galleries before the talk, enjoy lunch in The Restaurant, or stay on afterwards for dinner and a glass of something lovely.
