Sam Bassett in Conversation with Liz Gilmore
£15.00

Friday 27 November 2026 | 6pm–7pm

Join contemporary Cornish artist Sam Bassett in conversation with Liz Gilmore, CEO of The Sherborne, for a lively exploration of art, identity, landscape and life in Cornwall today.

Born in St Ives and raised in Carbis Bay, Bassett's connection to Cornwall runs deep. With family roots in fishing, mining and farming, and a studio in a former net loft at the historic Porthmeor Studios, his work draws on both the celebrated artistic heritage of St Ives and the lived experiences of its communities.

From his atmospheric fog paintings to works exploring humour, anxiety and the complexities of contemporary Cornish life, Bassett's practice reflects a place that is constantly changing.

Together, Bassett and Gilmore will explore the themes that shape his work, including housing, tourism, the loss of traditional industries and what it means to be an artist living and working in Cornwall today.

The conversation will also touch on the legacy of artists including Peter Lanyon, Barbara Hepworth, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Alfred Wallis, considering how the extraordinary artistic history of St Ives continues to inspire, challenge and influence a new generation.

An insightful and personal conversation bringing this November series into the present day.
