Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance is a comic operetta of irresistible wit, absurdity and delight, still sparkling with energy well over a century after it first appeared.
Frederic, having been accidentally apprenticed to a band of pirates as a child, believes that at last, on his 21st birthday, he is free to leave them behind. Determined to turn over a new leaf, he announces that he will dedicate himself to their destruction. But there is a catch, tucked neatly into the small print: born on 29 February, Frederic has technically only had five birthdays and is therefore bound to the Pirate King for many more years to come.
What follows is a gloriously improbable tale of duty, devotion and comic confusion, complete with tender romance, hapless policemen and a hero caught between love and loyalty. Will Frederic be condemned to pirate life until old age? And will his beloved Mabel really wait for him?
Performed by a six-strong cast of actor-singers with fully orchestrated accompaniment, The Pirates of Penzance is packed with some of the most beloved songs in comic opera, including I am the very model of a modern Major-General, A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One and I Am a Pirate King. Full of satire, silliness and melodic brilliance, it remains every bit as buoyant, sharp and entertaining today.
